Best Ned Rig Setups for Smallmouth Bass in 2026

Best Ned rig rods, reels, line, and baits for smallmouth bass. Proven setups that catch fish on pressured Northeast lakes.

The Ned rig has become one of the most reliable finesse techniques for smallmouth bass on pressured water. In clear lakes like Quabbin and Wachusett, when bass have seen every lure imaginable, a small mushroom-head jig with a floating ElaZtech plastic often gets bit when nothing else will.

Here’s the complete setup I’ve refined after many seasons of smallmouth fishing in Central Massachusetts.

Quick Recommendation

Best Ned Rig Setup: 7'0" Light Extra-Fast spinning rod + Pflueger President XT 30 + 8 lb braid + 6 lb fluorocarbon leader + Z-Man TRD on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz mushroom head.

This setup gives you maximum sensitivity to detect soft bottom bites while maintaining enough backbone to land quality smallmouth. The Pflueger President XT is the best reel for the job right now.

My Exact Go-To Ned Rig Setup

The fluorocarbon leader is important in clear water. Quabbin is very clear and bass get a good look at your presentation. The fluoro helps.

Best Ned Rig Plastics

Z-Man TRD (Tiny Ribbon Dip) — The original and still the best. The ElaZtech material is remarkably durable and floats the hook up naturally when the jig is sitting.

Z-Man Ned Rig Body — Slightly larger profile, good when bass want a bigger bait.

Green Pumpkin / Watermelon Red — Go-to colors for most Northeast water conditions.

California Craw — Excellent on Quabbin when crayfish are active (spring through early summer).

Black — Night fishing or very stained water.

How to Fish the Ned Rig Effectively

The technique is simple but requires patience:

Lift-and-Drag: Cast, let it hit bottom, drag it a foot or two along the bottom, pause 2–3 seconds, lift slightly, drag again. The bait stands up on the pause and looks like a feeding crayfish.

Shake: While dragging, add subtle rod tip shakes. The tail wiggles on its own but the shaking adds extra movement.

The key is the pause. Most bites come during or right after the pause. Don’t be in a hurry to move the bait.

Watch the line. With the braid/fluoro setup, watch where the fluorocarbon enters the water. A subtle sideways movement or slight twitch often indicates a pickup — hit it immediately.

Where to Fish the Ned Rig

Rocky points and humps — The Ned rig shines on hard bottom. It slides over rocks naturally and the stand-up action looks perfect.

Transitions — Where gravel meets sand, or rock meets soft bottom. Smallmouth patrol these edges.

Deep main lake structure — In summer, smallmouth push deeper. A Ned rig on a 1/8 oz head is perfect for 15–25 ft structure.

Pressured spots — If your go-to spot has been hit hard and the fish are being cautious, downsize to a Ned rig. It’s a great change-of-pace bait.

When Ned Rigs Work Best

  • Clear water conditions (Quabbin, Wachusett)
  • Pressured fish that have seen a lot of presentations
  • Cold water periods — early spring and late fall when bass are lethargic
  • When bass are feeding on small crayfish or baitfish near the bottom

They’re less effective in very muddy water or when bass are aggressively chasing bait in open water.

Final Thoughts

A good Ned rig setup should be in every Northeast bass angler’s arsenal. It’s one of the most consistent producers when other techniques slow down — especially on clear, heavily-fished lakes.

The Z-Man ElaZtech plastics are not optional here. Cheap foam substitutes don’t have the same action or durability. Buy the real thing.
